BFT Welding & Fabrication: The Lewisville Owner’s Guide

If you own a BFT gate and the frame, hinge, or mounting plate has cracked, torn, or separated, we stock BFT-compatible welding and fabrication parts on the truck and can typically complete the repair in one visit. Most BFT welding and fabrication repairs in Lewisville run between $240 and $680 installed, depending on whether we’re re-welding a cracked hinge in place or fabricating a new mounting plate for an operator that tore loose. You’ll usually find the problem the same way: the gate starts dragging on one corner, or the opener strains and throws an error code because a hinge has shifted out of alignment. The gate still runs, but it’s fighting its own weight, and that fight gets more expensive the longer it goes.

Which BFT Models This Applies To

BFT welding and fabrication work covers the full range of BFT swing and slide gate kits we see in Lewisville driveways: the BFT Deimos, Phobos, and Rigel swing operators, plus the BFT Bison and Icarius slide units. The welding points that matter are the hinge plates, the post brackets, the operator mounting plate, and the rack or arm connection points. If you’re trying to identify whether your hardware is original BFT or aftermarket, look for a stamped part number on the mounting plate itself, usually a string starting with a letter followed by six digits. BFT plates are metric: mounting holes are spaced in millimeters, not inches, which catches a lot of owners who try to bolt a generic plate from the hardware store onto a BFT arm. For most Lewisville homeowners, we recommend original BFT hardware if the operator is under five years old. After that, a quality aftermarket plate or hinge fabricated to the same metric spec is often the smarter money, and we’ll tell you honestly which one we’d put on our own gate.

Signs Your BFT Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

Signs Your BFT Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
  • The gate sags on the latch side. A worn or cracked bottom hinge lets the leaf drop, usually by a half inch or more. The cause is almost always metal fatigue at the weld where the hinge pin meets the plate.
  • The operator trips a fault code while the gate is mid-travel. When the mounting plate flexes or tears, the motor arm’s torque curve changes and the BFT control board interprets it as an obstruction. We’ve seen Deimos operators throw “obstruction” errors on a perfectly clear path because the plate was flexing under load.
  • You hear a creak or pop from the hinge area when the gate starts moving. That’s the sound of a cracked weld opening and closing. It won’t heal, and it spreads with every cycle.
  • The gate moves an inch or two before the leaf itself follows. Play between the operator arm and the gate means the bolt holes in the mounting plate have wallowed out. On BFT arms, those holes are precision-machined; once they oval out, re-tightening won’t hold for long.
  • Rust streaks run down from a weld joint. In Lewisville’s summer heat and occasional heavy rain cycles, a small crack in the powder coat lets water in, and the rust that follows tells you exactly where the structural problem is starting.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Lewisville, re-welding a cracked BFT hinge in place typically runs $240 to $380. Fabricating and installing a new operator mounting plate lands between $420 and $680. The range depends on three things: how thick the original steel is, whether the gate has to come off its hinges to work safely, and whether we’re matching an existing power-coat color or respraying the whole repair area. Every quote is written and handed to you before any work starts, with the part number, labor, and material broken out separately. Our welding work is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if that weld fails or the plate shifts within a year, we fix it at no charge. That’s Clause 1 and Clause 5 of our Haven Standard working together: a written price before the job, and a fix that stays fixed.

There’s an honest split here. You can safely spray the hinge area with penetrating oil, photograph the crack with a tape measure held next to it, and note whether the gate is level when closed. That’s useful information for us. What you shouldn’t do is attempt to weld a BFT hinge or mounting plate yourself. These are load-bearing parts under spring or motor tension, and a cold or under-penetrated weld on a gate that weighs several hundred pounds can fail without warning. We’ve had Lewisville customers show us homemade welds that looked fine from three feet away and were barely tacked underneath. The danger is the gate coming off its hinge while someone is walking through. We do this work with the gate properly supported, the motor disengaged, and the weld inspected before the weight goes back on. If you’re on the fence about whether your BFT part is welded, bolted, or just tired, call us at (817) 826-9477 and we’ll tell you what we’d check first.
