Viking Access Control Installation: The Lewisville Owner’s Guide
Viking access control installation in Lewisville typically runs between $450 and $1,200 installed, depending on whether we’re swapping a failed control board, replacing a keypad, or wiring a new card reader into an existing Viking operator. We stock Viking-compatible parts on our trucks, and in most cases we can complete the installation same day once we confirm which board revision your operator uses. Most Lewisville owners call us after the gate stops responding to a keypad or remote: sometimes it’s a dead keypad face, sometimes the control board has stopped reading inputs, and sometimes the operator runs fine but won’t accept any access signal at all. The first thing we do is identify whether the failure is in the access device, the wiring run, or the Viking board itself, because replacing the wrong layer doesn’t fix the gate.
Which Viking Models This Applies To
We work on the full Viking access control line that shows up on Lewisville driveways: the G-5, X-9, T-21, and the newer K-2 series operators all share the same access-control input architecture, but they do not all use the same control board revision. The biggest compatibility gotcha is the board revision: early G-5 boards used a 9-pin accessory header, while the 2016-and-later boards moved to a 12-pin header with a different keypad protocol. If you buy a keypad online for a G-5 and it doesn’t light up, that’s usually why. We identify the right part by opening the operator cover, reading the board revision number printed on the PCB, and matching it against the Viking accessory compatibility chart before we install anything. On the OEM-vs-aftermarket question: for Viking keypads and card readers, we use OEM Viking parts when the board is under warranty or when the customer wants the exact factory match. When the board is older, we carry quality aftermarket keypads and receivers that are wired to the Viking input spec and cost $80 to $150 less installed. Either way, you get the part number in writing before we touch the gate.
One more thing worth knowing: Viking access control boards handle both a wired keypad input and a radio receiver input on the same board, but the radio receiver is not universal. A LiftMaster remote will not talk to a Viking receiver, and a Viking remote won’t talk to a Ghost Controls board. If you have older remotes from a previous operator, bring them up when you call. We can tell you in about 30 seconds whether they’ll cross over or whether you need a new receiver card.
Signs Your Viking Access Control Installation Is Failing

- Keypad accepts the code but the gate doesn’t move. This usually means the keypad is sending the relay signal but the Viking board isn’t triggering the motor output. We check the relay click, then trace the signal at the board header. Often the board’s accessory fuse has blown or the relay contact is worn from years of daily codes.
- Keypad lights up but won’t accept any code, including the master code. The keypad’s membrane face or its internal memory chip has failed. Texas heat does this faster than any other failure mode: the adhesive layer inside the keypad face breaks down, and humidity gets in. We see this most often on west-facing gates in Lewisville with no shade over the keypad post.
- Gate opens on its own in the afternoon, or won’t close at night. That’s the sun. An infrared photo-eye or a keypad face in direct Lewisville afternoon sun can false-trigger or desensitize. We reposition the access device out of direct sun or shield it, then photograph the new position for the job record.
- Remote stopped working but the keypad still works. The Viking receiver card inside the operator has failed or lost its programming. We can re-flash the receiver to your existing remotes, or install a new receiver card and pair your remotes to it. This is a 45-minute job most of the time.
- Intermittent access: the gate works sometimes, then ignores inputs for an hour. Intermittent failures usually point to a wiring issue between the access device and the board, or a board with a failing voltage regulator. Texas temperature swings expand and contract the wire connections at the board header; a marginal crimp fails when it’s hot, works again when it cools. We check the full run with the access device connected under load, not just with a multimeter on an open circuit.
Before
AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Installed Viking access control prices in Lewisville break down like this:
- Viking keypad replacement (OEM): $450-$650 installed, depending on board revision and whether the keypad post needs rewiring.
- Aftermarket compatible keypad: $320-$450 installed, wired to Viking input spec.
- Viking receiver card replacement and remote pairing: $280-$420 installed.
- Full access control integration (keypad plus card reader plus receiver on an existing Viking board): $850-$1,200 installed.
The range depends on three things: which board revision your Viking operator is running, whether the existing wiring is salvageable or needs a new pull, and whether you want OEM or aftermarket components. Every quote is written before we start, under Haven Standard Clause 1: you get the flat price on paper, the part number going in, and a photographed record of what we found, what we set, and what we installed. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the installation for one full year. If something on that access control fails inside that window, we make it right at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?

Access control work on a Viking operator is not like swapping a wall thermostat. The board runs on low voltage, so the shock risk is low, but the damage risk to the board is real: a mis-wired keypad or a shorted accessory header can take out the board’s input circuit, and now you’re replacing a $400 board instead of a $200 keypad. What you can safely do yourself: check the keypad face for cracks or delamination, check the operator’s accessory fuse visually (clear or ceramic, depending on the board revision), and note exactly what the keypad does when you enter a code. What you shouldn’t do: jump wires at the board header, re-flash a receiver without knowing the current programming, or splice wiring with wire nuts inside the operator housing. We’ve repaired enough DIY Viking access installs in Lewisville to say this plainly: the repair usually costs more than the installation would have. FAQs
A Viking keypad on a shaded north-facing post in Lewisville lasts 8 to 12 years. On a west-facing post with no shade, plan on 4 to 6 years before the face delaminates and the code memory starts glitching. Sun exposure is the single biggest lifespan factor we see.
Sometimes. A blown accessory fuse, a burned wire-at-the-header connection, or a popped relay can be repaired at the component level. A board with a failed voltage regulator or a damaged input circuit is usually a replacement. We diagnose the board on-site and tell you which one you have before we quote it. Call (817) 826-9477 for an exact diagnosis, and we’ll tell you what we find.
Most keypad and receiver replacements run 45 to 90 minutes on-site. A full keypad-plus-card-reader-plus-receiver integration on an existing Viking board runs about 2 hours. We confirm the time in writing before we start.
We stock Viking-compatible keypads, receiver cards, and accessory components on our trucks, including aftermarket equivalents for older boards. If your board needs an OEM part we don’t have on hand, we can usually source it from a Dallas supplier within 24 hours. We also stock parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls operators, so if a board has failed and you decide to change course, we can handle that too.
If your Viking access control has failed, call Vance Gate Repair Lewisville at (817) 826-9477. We’ll name what we found, name what it costs, and leave you with a written record of everything we installed. Estimates are free, and a live person answers the phone 24 hours a day.
